Warner Bros. and DC have spent a fair amount of time this year restructuring and reorganizing their partnership in the way of staff and projects to be developed and let over the next four years or at least until 2020. One of those projects is director David F. Sandberg’s Shazam!. The film started off with a slow burn originally announcing Dwayne Johnson as playing the villainous role of Black Adam. Throughout the year the film’s schedule had been shuffled around and then uncertainty began to surround the films only firm cast member.
It was the early part of this year that Sandberg was announced as the film’s director giving it solid footing which then laid the foundation for further development and progress. Later in the year Warner Bros. and DC announced their movie schedule with films slated out till 2020. Among them was the Shazam! project which surprisingly held together among all of the shifting going on.
The film has begun to see more progress over the last month or so with pre-production underway and seemingly in full effect. The casting for the leading dual role is still unknown at this point but we are led to believe that auditions are ongoing, and it should be announced shortly who that leading man will be. It is unclear if the role of Billy Batson will be cast with the same actor playing Shazam with CGI effects or if it will be a different person altogether.
Now that the film has officially confirmed its April 2019 release it is within reason to expect that Warner Bros. and DC should be able to follow through with their initial proposed schedule for releasing two to three films per year. It would make sense to try and release two films at the very minimum especially when the competition is putting out a three a year standard.
Growing up I had always admired the Shazam story…a young boy/young man who had the ability to transform into an almost God-like person with amazing powers and brute strength. Life is never easy and when your young still learning about the world you think having powers such as Billy’s would maybe solve everything, but unfortunately like pretty much everyone in the world, we all deal with personal struggles and Billy Batson/Shazam aren’t any different.
With Justice League quickly approaching and several solo projects to follow, the rumors of a Justice League sequel now in development could make it very likely that Shazam could and would be joining the League at his rightful place next to the others who have proven they are worthy. Until then we will have to wait an see…hope.
