Gotham has seen many of its true cannon iconic characters grow and develop over the first three seasons. Some have blossomed more than others and has been somewhat obvious that the primary focus of the series has not been on Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and the Wayne Manor household but other still key characters such as Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), The Riddler, and other villains. I’ll have to agree to some extent but I think it is for good reason. There are so many characters, some not necessarily well known throughout the DC Comics realm, that have their own backstory/origin and realistically need the time to develop and introduce them properly.
Season Four is going to turn the tables onto Bruce, Alfred & Lucius Fox, and the development of Gotham’s true hero – Batman. Near the end of last season, we saw Bruce Wayne almost kill Alfred (Sean Pertwee) at the helm of Ra’s Al Ghul (Alexander Siddig). We began to see the true metamorphosis from a conflicted young man to masked vigilantly, and Bruce also started wearing the typical all black nighttime attire while he would take on the city’s seedy underbelly criminals. This latest season will see the metamorphosis continue as does his partnership with Alfred & Lucius who support him from the line (in the chair). The latest trailer shows Fox unveiling a new suit specifically developed for Wayne which is said to be bulletproof and looks a bit closer to the Dark Knight suit we hope to see him don later in the season – with the signature cape and cowl. Could we possibly be introduced to a new version of the Bat logo? One can only hope…
We can expect plenty of action this season with further development of relationships and characters alike. Jim Gordon, Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), The Penguin, The Riddler, The Joker, Ra’s Al Ghul, Mr Freeze and many more begin to align with their comic book counterpart. The ‘licensed criminals’ sanction which was birthed by Oswald Cobblepot will continue to be a focus for the GDPD and those who seek to take them down. Penguin’s opponent Butch Gilzean (Drew Powell) who was shot in the head last season by Barbara is rumored to resurrect from Cyrus Gold (recently changed his name) to the famous comic legend Solomon Grundy. Selina takes on a stronger relationship with Tabitha and encourages Kyle to pick up her very first whip and hone her skills as the future Catwoman.
Two characters that we are extremely excited to see develop is Jonathan Crane (aka The Scarecrow) and the Riddler: Edward “Ed” Nygma (Cory Michael Smith). The latest trailer reveals that this season will expand on both characters showing off their comic cannon suits/costumes; The Riddler sharply dressed in all green with hat and gloves. Crane’s suit/costume is a bit different than what we’ve seen before on film or TV and it looks amazing. Check out the trailer below and you’ll see what I mean.
So will the series continue beyond Season Four? The showrunners have given no clues regarding the shows fate once Bruce Wayne becomes Batman, but for the time being it is safe to assume the show will continue at least for another season or two. There is still a ways to go before Bruce truly becomes Batman. We’d like to see some of the tech tools and cool bat vehicles come into play at some point. After all Bruce is still a teenager and doesn’t even know how to drive yet. There is plenty of room for more development and growth to acquire underneath that utility belt.
Gotham returns next Thursday with ‘A Dark Knight: The Fear Reaper’ at 8pm on FOX.
